It’s in the Bag!

As promised I’m back again, and this time to discuss one of my favorite, if not most favorite accessories. The infamous handbag. Anyone that knows me, knows that my biggest affliction is my love for handbags. From hobos, clutches, to designer fannypacks and backpacks. I shamingly have to confess that more than once I’ve spent an unseemingly amount on many purses. So this expensive experience has taught me a few things or two about what to look for, if something is worth that much money, and can we find it cheaper?

So my goal is share some tips on those factors. Whether you’re spending $1000 or $50, there are common details to look for. Truthfully, you know that if you pay the arm, leg, foot, and ear for the Chanel, Goyard or Hermes bag, you’ll have it for life, and will probably write it in a will to your children. But just because a bag carries a hefty price tag, it does not mean it is built to weather the storm of your life with you. Let’s start with materials. Lambskin/calfskin is soft and supple but easily gets scars from objects scratching against it, a bag that uses a lot of this is the Classic Chanel Jumbo flap bag. Where’as the Hermes Leather is strong , hard and sturdy, similar to Louis Vuitton’s vachetta lining, and leather canvas material. Patent leather’s are actually very sturdy, scratch, smudge and spill proof. It’s actually my favorite of the leathers. This goes without saying, but anything beaded, tweed, or made from soft materials are going to be delicate and require extra care.

Here are a few details that not everyone pays attention to when buying a bag. Regardless if it’s Gucci, Marc Jacobs or Target.. I’ve found hits and misses in all. The number one thing for me is the zipper. No matter the cost of the bag, the zipper must open and close effortlessly, without having to wax it or anything else. The zipper is one of those things you will use often, and anything with a jerky zipper isn’t worth it’s weight in cereal. People think i’m crazy but when I purchase a bag, I will stand there zipping and unzipping it until I’m sure it’s good. Symmetry, stitching, and metallic luster are also important details. Don’t buy a bag until you’re sure everything is evenly matched, and that the metal clasps, zippers, and buckles are not going to chip on you. I also do not believe that your bag has to be boring and match everything.. truthfully the handbag is the one area where drama is a great addition to any look. Sequins, colors, embroidery, all of it can be done magnificently.

Here are my top 3 types of bags every woman should have
1) The reliable large hobo/tote that can fit everything
2) The chic clutch for going out, or casual days shopping
3) A sleek shoulder bag a the “Chanel” length (which falls perfectly above waist).

Remember at any dollar amount, make sure what you’re buying is worth the amount of money being spent.
